At one point or the other in everyone’s life, you are likely to experience some depression. The only difference is that some people are able to bounce back from these spells while others find it really challenging. A lot of people find it difficult to cope with depression naturally and might even turn to several destructive avenues to find relief.

- When you are constantly alone and isolated from other people.

- You begin to experience things in your life that causes you extreme stress.
- You might have a family history of depression.
- Marital or relationship difficulties.
- Financial strain can lead to depression.
- An individual who has experienced early childhood trauma or abuse can be prone to depression.
- Being unemployed or underpaid.
- Health problems or severe pain can lead to depression.

Don’t just go to a friend, they might not be able to deal with the situation. An expert therapist is trained for these issues and they would know how to handle it better. They know the right advice and counseling to give you that would make you feel better.

2. Avoid Depression Triggers

The kind of food you eat affects you significantly. It affects both your physical and mental health.
Processed foods, alcohols and smoking cigarettes do not only affect your health negatively, they also release toxins into your bloodstream that can lead to depression.
Eating unhealthy foods can trigger stress hormones that can trigger depression. Eating healthy foods would boost your mood by injecting the feel good hormone oxytocin in your system.
Eating healthy would not only make you healthier but happier.

4. Regulate your Sleeping Schedules
I am not saying that sleeping would help you cure depression, but it is a step in the right direction. You might not even know it, but your depression might be caused because you are not getting adequate amounts of sleep.
It is important that you sleep up to 7 – 8 hours everyday. Anything less than that means that your brain would not have the required amount of rest time.
Lack of sleep can cause your anxiety and stress levels to increase. Increase in your anxiety and stress levels would only end up worsening your depression.
Since you are aren’t sleeping well which worsens your depression, your depression then leads you to suffer from insomnia. You then find yourself in a toxic cycle that might be difficult to break away from.
If you are suffering from depression, it is important that you make the required effort to sleep on time and wake up early in the morning every day.
Note: When I recommend 8 hours of sleep everyday, I mean 8 hours of night sleep. Your body has a clock called a circadian clock. You need adequate night sleep to feel energized for the rest of the day.

5. Exercise/Take Regular Walks
Make it a habit that you go out for walks or jogs every morning. It doesn’t have to be for miles or for long periods of time, 20 minutes of walk time is enough.
Taking walks in the early morning air is very therapeutic. It helps you to let go of the stress.
It is also a good form of exercise. Exercise is very important because it helps with the circulation of blood and nutrients to the vitals organs and muscles in your body.
If you have more time for more than a walk, you should join a gym. Regular workout has been proven to help with depression. Plus going to the gym would mean that you would other people that you can interact with.

6. Be more Social
I had mentioned earlier that one of the causes of depression is because you might feel lonely or isolated. If you are someone who doesn’t enjoy going out or associating with other people, then you should do the exact opposite of that.
When you are depressed, you might not feel like going to that party or family gathering. That isn’t the right thing to do. It would only make your depression worse. You would find that you would even develop self loathing because you know that deep down you could be having some fun at that moment.
The more you surround yourself with friends and loved ones, the less stress you would experience. A good time would also distract you from whatever that is on your mind.
Open your mind to the possibilities and all the the fun you could be having instead of staying all alone in your home.
7. Take Care of Yourself
Self-care does wonders to the body and the mind. A day of self-care would leave you feeling energized and refreshed.
A lot of things in your daily life can lead stress. You have an exam that you want to write and it’s stressing you out. Your job is taking a huge toll on you and you no longer have time to do the things you love.
There are a lot if things that can cause stress and the simplest solution is to take a day out and treat your self good.
What other way to self care than taking a trip to the spa.
Give your self a good and relaxing day by spending a full day at a spa. Enjoy the hot baths, massages and mani-pedi. All these activities serves as therapy and they help to reduce stress and calms your nerves.
A day at the spa would serve as a reboot and keep your feeling refreshed for the whole week.
Depression can be overwhelming, but by following these steps on how to cope with depression, you would begin to see considerable changes.
